Blog / Chris Murdoch: Where relationships become a remarkable rural career

Where trust becomes a lasting legacy

In rural communities, reputations aren’t built overnight. They’re earned through trust, knowledge and consistently delivering for people.

Few careers demonstrate that better than Chris Murdoch’s.

Named the 2026 REINZ Individual Rural Salesperson of the Year, Chris stands among the most accomplished and respected names in New Zealand rural real estate.

The national title adds another significant milestone to an extraordinary career. Chris has sold approximately $2 billion in real estate, including around $950 million over the past 13 years alone. Few have written more rural real estate business.

But behind those numbers is a story that has always been about people.

Chris grew up on his family farm at Mayfield, worked on farms overseas and spent 12 years running his own agricultural contracting business before moving into real estate in 1990. Farming wasn’t a market he had to learn. It was a world he already understood.

That grounding has remained central to the way he works.

Over more than three decades, Chris has become a trusted adviser to farming families across Mid Canterbury and beyond. Much of his success has been built on the loyalty of clients who have returned to work with him time and again.

In many cases, those relationships have extended across generations, with Chris now working with the sons and daughters of people he first helped years ago.

There have been major corporate transactions and complex Overseas Investment Office deals along the way, but equally important have been the countless conversations around kitchen tables and at farm gates, helping families make decisions about land, businesses and legacies.

Chris has long believed that “knowledge is power”, and his knowledge has been earned through a lifetime immersed in farming and decades spent watching the rural property market evolve.

His success also sits within an Ashburton office with an exceptional rural pedigree.

In 2025, Property Brokers Ashburton was named REINZ Rural Office of the Year - Small for the third time. Now, Chris has added the 2026 individual national title to that proud record.

And behind Chris’s career has been another constant: his family. Real estate is rarely a nine-to-five profession, and Chris is quick to acknowledge the understanding and support of his wife Leonie and their family over the years. Building a career at this level takes

commitment from more than one person - and, as Chris knows, being married to a real estate agent isn’t always easy.

The 2026 national title is another remarkable achievement in a career full of them. Yet perhaps the greatest measure of Chris Murdoch’s success isn’t the billions of dollars in property sold or the awards beside his name.

It’s the loyalty of generations of farming families who continue to place their trust in him, and the family who have supported him every step of the way.

And in rural New Zealand, there are few accolades greater than that.
